Guerrilleros

Working behind enemy lines, the Guerrilleros undermine the morale of enemy populations.

In the writings of Ernesto Guevara, guerilla warfare is the ultimate form of activist engagement, and its fighters are the revolutionary process’s avant-garde. Formulated following his experiences in the Cuban Revolution, Guevara’s theories advocate the formation of small combat units (foco) concentrated in remote rural areas. There, the support of peasant communities and their knowledge of the local terrain allow for combat against better-equipped, regular troops with greater manpower.
This approach, practiced by Fidel Castro’s barbudos beginning in 1956, enabled the revolutionaries to create an impregnable rear base in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra. Recruiting from peasant and urban populations, they carried out continuous raids that provided them with fresh supplies and weapons, demoralized the loyalist troops, and opened the routes to the country’s largest cities by the winter of 1958. Their organization into columns of thirty guerilleros, each led by a commandante, offered the fighters excellent mobility and an ability to disappear into their surroundings.
