Gauchos

With intimate ties to the land, Gauchos' knowledge of the terrain proves most valuable in times of war.

In the Southern Cone regions at the beginning of the 19th century, the term gaucho referred to the peasants, mainly of Creole origin, who worked in agricultural holdings. Engaged in Argentine conflicts throughout the century, gauchos were inseparable from the figure of the caudillo. This typical provincial strongman and warlord was able to supply horses, weapons, and supplies to the men he recruited in his region. Spearheading the battalions of Martín Miguel de Güemes during the War of Independence, groups of gauchos were afterwards routinely enrolled alongside regular troops in the federalist armies. They distinguished themselves through their ability to exhaust their enemies with short, frequent skirmishes from which they could easily retreat, thanks to their knowledge of the terrain and local populations’ support.
Over the 19th century, the gaucho became an idealized figure in romantic fiction and a symbol of Argentine identity, notably in the book Facundo written by future president Sarmiento.
