Polar Base

The Antarctic region of the Ross Sea became a dependency of New Zealand by decision of the British Imperial Authority in 1923. Left undeveloped for several decades, the New Zealand government began investing in the region in the 1950s following the Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Vivian Fuchs and Edmund Hillary (1955-1958), and the archipelago's participation in the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year. The construction of the Scott Base on the same territory in 1957 definitively confirmed New Zealand's interest in Antarctic scientific research. Since then, scientists from New Zealand have successfully conducted studies in geology, glaciology, and zoology at Scott Base. Supported by ambitious university programs, this research has made it possible, among other things, to confirm hypotheses about continental drift. Today, Scott Base welcomes several hundred researchers every year. During the peak season from October to February, the site can accommodate more than 80 people at once.
