Sailing Club

The numerous sailing clubs built starting from the late 19th century in most of New Zealand's port cities played a key role in the development of aquatic sports in the archipelago. From the 1950s onwards, these clubs saw their numbers soar, promoting races and organizing regattas as technical developments made sailing more affordable. The postwar years brought their fair share of innovations, both in terms of boat models and construction materials. In a society with greater access to leisure activities, these new smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable recreational crafts further democratized nautical sport. The influx of enthusiasts soon led to the reorganization of the industry: in 1950, the New Zealand Yachting Federation was created with the aim of taking part in the Olympic Games. The successes achieved in these events, as well as in internationally renowned regattas, led to sailing crews’ professionalization, and paved the way for New Zealand’s first America’s Cup victories beginning in the 1990s.
